Two warring crime families complicate matters in “MobLand,” Ronan Bennett’s 2025 crime drama series. Though details of the families’ brawl remain fuzzy — that’s the British gangster genre for you — the series does have a lot to say about the profession and, sadly, the most important people in whose honor this profession exists. Following the families’ intertwining fates means watching a game of power and betrayal play out against a backdrop of honor and treason, something TV viewers haven’t really seen before. It remains to be seen how Ronan Bennett will pull off such a series but the end product is alive already with a lot of potential.

Performance Metrics

The actors of this series are, without doubt, the biggest cash assets. For example, audience reviews indicate that Pierce Brosnan, as the family man patriarch, has a strong, unique performance. This is noticed as a highlight of the show and helps audiences dig into the segments of the series. Paddy Considine's performance is appreciated in the reviews, albeit, less vocal in comparison. Tom Hardy, as the right-hand man of the organization, also creates a divide among the viewers. While some call his performance brilliant and spot on, given his reputation for strong and passionate roles, others say this performance of his ranks very low, and in fact, an average actor could have performed this role just as well. This shows that Hardy's presence creates a draw, but the performance of this role, for the most part, does not. Some describe the performances and the style as larger than life - almost theatrical and over the top - in portraying the criminal underworld's story, and compared to some other stories or movies, where many different strands interweave, this is described as similar to a story that has the "Guy Ritchie treatment" (i.e. many plotlines that interweave, etc).

While entertaining, "MobLand" has issues. Clichés in the British organized crime genre make the dialogue feel shallow and contrived, leading to a lack of empathetic characters. The plot relies on the suspension of disbelief with some implausible plot twists that get progressively worse, causing some audience members to describe the series as feeling “somewhat like a satire.” The overbearing loud production also takes away from the existential value of the series. These issues in addition to the harsh criticism Tom Hardy has received for his performance all make for an inconsistent series that is compromised in quality and beliability, focusing more on the overly flashy and less on the values that are entertaining. Positive aspects of the series are quickly obstructed.

Platform Compatibility

The grandiose nature of the series and its use of "loud tones" means that "MobLand" is best experienced with its wonderful visual and auditory aspects on larger displays. A PC monitor or a TV with a connected TV screen will give users the most immersive experience, especially since the series benefits from being able to capture and hold audience attention while they take in its many threads that span multiple storylines. The best one can do on a smaller Android device is to settle for the series' functionality, but one should expect to lose a good deal of its production design and the intensity of its soundscape. For best results, this series will be most enjoyable for users that are in control of their home entertainment systems and are able to make the series a Moviebox experience, rather than a quick watch on a mobile device.

"MobLand" is a worthy addition to the British crime drama genre, even with its clear shortcomings. You could do a lot worse in the genre for your entertainment needs, but it definitely doesn't elevate the genre.
