System Architecture: The Alternate Life Premise

In Dark Matter, there's a fast and dynamic setup of protagonist Jason Dessen stepping into an alternate version of his life where he's put to the test, choosing one path over another to return to his previous reality. This story is much inspired by Blake Crouch's novel, and was set to debut in 2024. They have successfully placed their main character against a main antagonist that is himself. These dark humor elements in the first few episodes are quickly drawn in to explain the fundamental paradox but still leave enough to spark the audience's interest. These scenarios are entertaining to see played out while also keeping the audience thinking about all the paths not taken, the regrets they carry, and frankly, how wildly different their identity could be.

Feature Highlights: Performance & Pacing Prowess

The cast is this series' strongest suit, with a standout performance from Joel Edgerton. Playing the role of Jason, Edgerton balances regret and desire to a degree that is particularly impressive. Edgerton also brilliantly distinguishes Jason from his alternative self, usually shifting his demeanor and how intense he is. This is a key part of the story, and Edgerton nailed it. Daniela, played by Jennifer Connelly, also gives an excellent performance, conveying the tragedy of a relationship that is marred by events that are, quite simply, out of the characters' control. There are better moments of the Director Peter Crouch's work, where the plot's fast pace is attributed to the traveling mechanics that connect worlds. This also gives it the ability to build some good plot tension. This is partly due to the focus on the more present, real world problems the characters face. Dark Matter also has strong execution when dealing with the emotional impact of certain characters' actions, and as a result, the audience is able to invest in the characters. There is also a production design of alternate Chicago that deserves recognition because it creates a new realistic, yet alternative world compared to the first.

Known Issues: Narrative Bloat & Trope Fatigue

Dark Matter may suffer from some oversights, but nothing jumps out as significant. An audience favorite trope nowadays is the alternate reality. The story does its best to develop this further, but at times this does little for originality and instead highlights the sameness in the industry. While at times enjoyable, the series can at times get stale. The pacing is good, but inconsistent. Some critics say the good ideas are spread out too much, so plot lines get repetitive, and emotional moments do not deeply layer the characters or answer the bigger questions surrounding the plot. As the series progresses, some mistakes can be attributed to poor writing. Characters act desensically to progress the plot. Exploring family dynamics and relationships in each reality is interesting, but at times the series can get stale.

Device Fit: Scaling the Multiverse

Dark Matter balances details to meet the needs of different viewing environments. On a mobile device, the focus is on the character claims and emotional moments. Visual effects can be rendered with darker lines to maintain the viewers' focus and draw them more deeply into the series. With the additional space of a computer monitor or larger TV, the other dimensions of Chicago can be drawn and the 'box' shown to aid the travel of dimensions. Dark Matter balances dark colors with a lot of gray to show the subtleties of the realities and is best appreciated with color and contrast balanced well. The larger the screen is, the now unspecified speculations and the series' balance of drama can be better appreciated.

Release Notes: Install or Skip?

Although it struggles at times with familiar plot lines and pacing, Dark Matter has many positive qualities: strong acting and an engaging central conflict. These will keep audiences coming back for more. This sci-fi drama also has a character driven story, high emotional Investment, and well known sci-fi plot lines. Dark Matter also has a solid multiversal chase, but has a few minor performance glitches.
