Jeong Ji-an (Kim Hye-jun) is the protagonist in A Shop For Killers, which centers on her after her uncle, Jeong Jin-man (Lee Dong-wook), unexpectedly passes away and leaves her with a risky inheritance of some sort. His online shopping mall leaves him one of the more relatable characters in this series. What Ji-an uncovers is the dark and twisted legacy that Jin-man has left behind. Feature Highlights: Performance & Pacing

This package's most valuable assets are strong performances and the series' propensity for indulging in big, climactic set pieces. Lee Dong Wook provides a solid performance as Jin-man and adds the necessary weight to his character as well as a palpable intensity in order to sell his character's previously hidden life. Kim Hye Jun as Ji-an Cart’s the burden of her character’s grief while navigating the different timelines. Sarah Musnucky of But Why Tho? enjoyed the series as an “action-packed” set with “compelling characters that will lure you in.” The first few episodes set the pacing for the series and ratchet of some good old fashioned tension. Sayantan Gayen of Comic Book Resources was among a number of people who mentioned an appetite to find out what happens next. The fight choreography is the expected stretching of the envelope of reality, but is well done and serves the purpose of a good action thriller. The series enjoys the use of its dueling mystery genre to great effect, saving reveals for Jin-man's past and Ji-an's hidden powers for later, and pointing the series along the relationship.

Known Issues: Narrative Jumps & Logic Gaps

The longstanding switching between past and present timelines may disrupt the narrative, but is required for the story. While the narrative doesn’t always flow linearly and is supplemented by lateral shifts in the overall narrative, some of the audience reviews complained that the primary story becomes almost impossible to follow and results in a lot of frustration. Some characters also exhibit behaviors and make decisions that not only deter immersion, but also create plot holes, as noted by Puah Ziwei of NME. The protagonist has an explanation for their name change, however, the antagonist, Jin-man, carries out some "quirky," seemingly pointless, actions. Pierce Conran of the South China Morning Post also referenced the "stylish" opening, but was among the reviewers that may have suffered “buyer’s remorse,” indicating plot holes and lack of resolution in following episodes. These plot lines disrupt the overall cohesion and enjoyment of the story.

A Shop for Killers presents an immersive environment that makes it ideal for bigger displays. The detailed action sequences and set pieces in the ‘shopping mall‘ and the dark and moody cinematography benefit from better displays like PC monitors or even better TV screens. Watching on these cinematic displays allows for better appreciation of the cinematic storytelling and combat choreography. While this show is watchable on smaller Android devices, some of the visual storytelling and the cinematic combat choreography suffers. Darker scenes might even lose some of their brilliance seen through smaller displays. The editing in this show can be even be tough to follow on smaller screens due to distractibility, as there are a lot of fast, rapid cuts that require you to follow a lot of different things at once. The best way to enjoy the cinematic production and the complex storyline that this show offers is to set up the show on your desktop or a connected TV.
