Release Overview: The Owens' Latest Update

Practical Magic 2 is here in an expected yet intriguing way. The sisters, once again, must deal with the family curse and put an end to the witch times once and for all. Fans will get to see an epic fight against this family curse, the end of the family, and the end of the family curse once and for all. The film plays up that this is the follow up we have all been waiting for and jumps right in to the family curse and the strong family relationships we fell in love with the first time around. Directing this film is Susanne Bier and there is a great hope for her to bring a different outlook on the horror genre. The reaction to her work in the film is at best, a new chapter in the book. On paper maybe this is the course of events to further the Owens family, but a patch is the best that can be hoped for.

The combination of returning stars Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman together with Joey King is definitely a selling point of the film. Bullock and Kidman seem to have slipped back into their characters as if the time since their first outing together was seconds rather than years. Between the two of them is some seriously warm and fuzzy chemistry. It shows in scenes of gentle sisterly banter. For a script that is very much rooted in been here done that some scenes actually are raised to a new level of script. King’s inclusion as a newer generation Owens role is also somewhat of a breath of fresh air, though her character stays mostly stagnate. She seems to be an underdeveloped character serving mainly as a means of moving the story forward for the other actors. Bier’s combination of fantasy and emotional grounding is somewhat of a rollercoaster. There are a lot of neat ideas shown with special effects regarding the Owens’ magic and their house, and these ideas translate well across different methods of viewing. Sadly, this is about as far as it goes, especially regarding comedic moments. It seems that with this film, the narrow range of committing to drama or comedy left the cast with a very challenging range to cover.

Known Bugs & Performance Issues

The main “bug” with Practical Magic 2 is its ambitions for a narrative with its delivery. The “dark curse” never materializes and mostly gets lost in exposition instead of being revealed in a suspenseful manner. The movie struggles with pacing, becoming sluggish as it tries to build emotional stakes with some elements of the fantasy world, at times feeling like an afterthought or a last-minute plot device. The original movie was more entertaining because of its “practical magic,” but that does not appear as the fantasy elements of this movie are forgotten until they are needed. Many critics did not appreciate the movie as they consider it to be less original and more dependent on good will nostalgia and a safe approach, instead of telling a new story. While there is a great cast, the movie ends up feeling like a chore. With a two hour run time, you would hope that something fascinating would happen, and something does with the “PG13” rating, which feels like there was a safe and dull approach to the story.
