2026 brings a live-action version of “Moana” focused on Catherine Lagaʻaia as teen Moana and Dwayne Johnson as Maui. Moana answers the call of the Ocean and takes a journey beyond Motunui, which is now her people’s home, and has to bring a reluctant demigod Maui to help restore their prosperity. Obviously, a direct adaptation uses the same plot as the original. The family-friendly adventure story of identity, destiny, and enviro-friendly storytelling is all here. Those who have seen the first “Moana” won't find many surprises as the feature stays very close to constructing the same plot events and musical numbers. Those who enjoyed the first “Moana” should have few complaints about this adaptation.

Core Feature Highlights

Most critics seem to scoff at some of the elements of the reboot package, but some elements do show improvement. One of these improvements is casting Catherine Lagaʻaia as Moana; she brings warmth and sincerity that has been praised by critics and audiences. Moana's presence is grounded and real compared to some of the other more artificial elements of the movie. Moana and Maui, played by Dwayne Johnson, also have good onscreen chemistry, although I will say that the CGI of Maui's feather isn't as seamless and natural as it could be. Fortunately, this version of the movie takes live performance over the original movie's animation, especially for the song performances that made the original soundtrack so strong. The live-action performance also manages to avoid some of the jarring CGI mistakes that have plagued other recent live action movie adaptations.

Identified Known Issues

There are significant issues with this design as well, many of them related to the design philosophy. The biggest of these is how the film is almost painfully faithful to its ancestor. This has made many feel that this film is a shot-for-shot remake, while others are saying that this film is more of an adaptation. By taking almost no creative control, critics say that this film is lacking a reason for its existence in the world of art and aesthetics. Instead of bright, sunny landscapes, most scenes are bland. Reviewers said this film looks more like a commercial and less like a great adventure. The digital environments make the live-action elements dull. This can also distract from musically exciting scenes and make them dull as well. In the live-action version, this adaptation style can seem cheesy. The intent of this film is lost to the style of old-world animated folklore.

Device Fit & Optimal Experience

Your display screen will affect the enjoyment of Moana (2026). Smaller, portable displays such as a phone or a tablet, may have some blurriness, but the movie can still be used as background entertainment. Kids will even enjoy this movie with blurry background entertainment as they are already used to the story. To be honest, the vibrant colors do not have to shine bright. As a background entertainment, this movie will provide enough of a distraction to captivate any viewer. On better displays, like a computer or TV, the blurriness of the movie will be worse. Large displays of the movie will show the limitations of synthetically built movie sets. The use of green screen, awkward physically imposed animation, and the overall synthetic environment will be glaringly obvious. Large displays only enhance the movie's artificiality. Moana's world is an ocean, and the slow pacing creates a large expanse to roam. Large displays show an artificial scenic pacing of the movie versus a natural flow to fully appreciate the movie.

If you're picky about your tikis and insist on the animated Moana, maybe take a peek. Otherwise, skip this release, people. Even though Catherine Laga'aia performs with warmth, this release still lacks purpose andized a sterile emptiness that stunts its potential. This new version surprisingly is a high-fidelity release just like before, but with added functionalities and some subtractions. If you're deciding between waiting for the next major content release, personally, I'd take the leap back to the original build first. This new build falls short. Once again.
