André de Shields is perfectly Hermes with his anni HADDIS acting experience. The performances by all actors are excellent and smoothly mesh to create a world. The production's excellent unique jazz, folk, and blues score is captured extremely well, instrumentation is full and vocal performances are arranged and clean. Brett Sullivan as the director has a strong selection of staging shots and edits that capture what is losing with audience seating and allow the camera to capture more theatrical staging. The capture doesn't just document the performance, but serves to frame the performance and capture the large scale, but still capture detail of individual performers, which is very hard to do with an audience.

Known Issues

While live-capture technology extends access to quality, first-run productions beyond the confines of theaters, there are certain drawbacks unique to this tech. Though the film has impressive Phypters and uses a variety of cameras, it can never fully capture the dimensions of a live production in the way that technology currently permits. Sometimes the camera positions even remind viewers that they are not actually looking at the actors ‘live’ onstage and that they are in fact looking at a flat screen like a TV. Even the presence of a large number of actors on stage does not feel as epic compared to being there. Some audiences use to watching traditional film will also have to get used to the new conventions of stage pacing. There are times in a stage production where the films would cross cut or even cut away, rather than show the actors performing that action. Though the story of this musical is very strong, it is a stylized, modern interpretation of a well-known myth, which will not appeal to an audience that prefers a modern and realistic story. Ultimately this accessibility is not a drawback within the context of the show’s audience, however, for other potential audience members, the theatrical treatment, which is a draw for the show’s core audience members, may be a deterrent.
